After a fire at their previous home destroyed everything Rosa, her mother, and her grandmother had, they saved their coins in a big jar in hopes of purchasing a “wonderful, beautiful, fat, soft armchair.” Their new apartment had many things that were generously donated to them after the fire, but they didn’t have a cozy and comfortable place for Rosa’s mother to sit after a long day of work at the Blue Tile Diner.
